Last year the Citi team captained by Daniel Abut took top honors in Financial Institutions; this year the sector has been expanded to include Banking & Financial Services, and Abut, 47, again captures the crown. The New York–based analysts are adept at “identifying key valuation drivers,” according to one money manager.

In May 2009 the four-member team upgraded Intergroup Financial Services Corp. from hold to buy, dubbing shares of the Peruvian bank and insurance services provider a bargain at $10.71. By late July the stock price had more than doubled, to $22.80, far outpacing the sector’s otherwise-impressive 46.4 percent gain. Abut “gathers the facts, presents his case — and he’s usually right,” marvels one investor.
