Returning to second place after a year at No. 3, Citi’s three-member team steered by Richard Edwards provides “a textbook example of the benefit of gray hairs and experience in dealing with the volatility of a cyclical industry,” according to one buy-side enthusiast. The analysts advised clients in April to buy shares of Carphone Warehouse Group, at 180p, explaining that the London-based mobile phone retailer’s demerger in late March from its telecommunications unit, TalkTalk Telecom Group, would enable the company to focus on its core strengths and improve operational efficiency. By the end of December, Carphone’s stock had rung up eye-popping gains of 119.6 percent to close the year at 395.25p.
