In the No. 2 spot on this lineup, up from third place, is Hidekatsu Watanabe. The Mizuho Securities Group researcher also captures his third straight top finish on the Health Care & Pharmaceuticals roster. Beyond the 34 names he actively tracks, he is known for compiling forecasts on 20 related stocks with no formal ratings. “His knowledge cuts across a huge range of sectors, which makes him well equipped to engage in broad conversations,” one admirer confirms. Watanabe, 49, also continues to win investor plaudits for his long-standing bullishness on Asahi Intecc Co., an Aichi-based maker of such precision instruments as catheters and industrial coils and wire rope that he has favored since October 2008, when the stock was trading at the low price of ¥50, on a split-adjusted basis. Currently favored because new products are driving earnings expansion, the shares rose 24 percent during the 12 months through mid-March, to ¥4,890, and outperformed the Japanese sector by 29.7 percentage points. The analyst’s price target is ¥6,300. “Watanabe-san knows his companies inside and out,” cheers another backer.
