Industries: Financials/Nonbanks – First

Victor Schabbel & team Credit Suisse

The buy side says: “This is a sharply perceptive team.

N ewcomer Victor Schabbel, 27, leads his São Paulo–based Credit Suisse squad of three to first place in this new sector, which we created by dividing Banking & Financial Services into Financials/Banks and Financials/Nonbanks. (The firm claimed a runner-up spot last year in the predecessor sector.) “Victor is always clear about where he stands,” asserts one buy-side fan. The group impressed clients with upgrades on two Brazilian electronic-payment-solutions providers in June 2011: Cielo, from neutral to outperform, on its increasing penetration into prepayment plans; and Redecard, from underperform to outperform, largely on its market share gains. Cielo’s stock soared sky-high, climbing 99.4 percent, from 30.39 reais to 60.60 reais, through mid-July; Redecard shares bolted 54.4 percent, from 21.37 reais to 33 reais. During the same period the sector slipped 7.5 percent. Schabbel joined the firm in July 2009 from Santander Asset Management, where he served as a credit analyst. He received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Rio de Janeiro’s Fundação Getulio Vargas. For the year ahead the analysts favor Cetip, a clearinghouse for Brazilian over-the-counter trades, primarily on valuation. — Ben Mattlin
