At No. 2 on this list for a fourth consecutive year is Nomura’s Tomohiro Araki, 39. The analyst has expanded his portfolio by four names and now tracks 30 Japanese real estate investment trusts. Among the names he added over the past year is Japan Hotel REIT Investment Corp., a Tokyo-based hotel and resorts owner. Araki initiated coverage on the company in August with a buy rating, citing rising tourism. By late March the shares had leaped 48.3 percent, to ¥56,100, outperforming the domestic sector by 37.7 percentage points. He expects them to rise to ¥91,600. A longer-term favorite is Hoshino Resorts REIT of Tokyo, which invests in golf courses, hotels, inns and ski resorts, among other facilities. The researcher has recommended buying the stock since August 2013, dubbing it a bargain at ¥591,000. It subsequently rocketed 132 percent, to ¥1,371,000, through late last month, while its Japanese peers posted a gain of 28.3 percent. During the 12-month period through late March, the shares soared 89.1 percent, besting the wider group by 68 percentage points. He still believes that Hoshino is undervalued and recommends buying it, maintaining a target price of ¥1,388,000. Araki is “detailed in his work and able to provide useful information,” remarks one money manager.
