The 2014 All-Japan Research Team: Machinery, No. 3: Hidehiko Hoshino

< The 2014 All-Japan Research Team Hidehiko Hoshino UBS First-place appearances: 3

Total appearances: 18

Analyst debut: 1997 A doyen of machinery analysts who marks his 18th straight appearance on this lineup, Hidehiko Hoshino dips to third place after four years at No. 2. Yet he maintains a sturdy base of buy-side support. The UBS researcher “is an accomplished analyst with nearly three decades of experience in Japan,” marvels one advocate. “Although he doesn’t publish as much as some of the others, his ability to present data and analysis and help investors see the total picture is quite impressive.” Hoshino is currently urging clients to buy Tokyo-based Ebara Corp., which manufactures environmental and industrial machinery primarily for use in energy industries. “As one of the leading suppliers of compressors and turbine engines to the downstream plants,” he advises, “Ebara is a beneficiary of the shale-gas story.” In particular, he forecasts double-digit, year-over-year growth in the company’s top line and in its operating profits for the current fiscal year, which ends in March 2015. Hoshino therefore sees substantial upside for Ebara’s stock. His ¥900 target price for the shares is 41.1 percent above their mid-March trading value.
