"They have a great grasp on the sector."

Adam Wood shepherds the four-strong Morgan Stanley squad from third place all the way to No. 1. The London-based analysts now follow 12 companies, having dropped several owing to acquisitions: Vista Equity Partners, a technology-centric private equity firm headquartered in the U.S., took over British software developer Misys in June, and Canadian information technology services provider CGI Group bought U.K.-based tech consulting firm Logica in August. The team relaunched coverage of Germany's SAP in February 2012 with an overweight rating, at €48.85, "on the back of SAP's innovation cycle and the change of the company's mix toward fast-growth areas like big data, cloud and mobile computing," explains Wood. The stock shot up 24.2 percent, to €60.69, and beat the sector by 3 percentage points, through December. The researchers "understood the growth opportunities ahead of SAP and were able to convey how the company was going to take advantage of them," marvels one appreciative client. Wood, 38, joined Morgan Stanley in 2010 from Exane BNP Paribas, where he led the software and information-technology services team. He holds a bachelor's degree in modern languages from England's University of Durham. — Pam Baker
