The six-member Nomura International team, which repeats in third place, “has gone further than most sell-side quant analysts to understand the practical priorities and constraints that quant portfolio managers face,” declares one London-based investment manager. One issue being debated by those managers is whether to tilt their portfolios toward value or quality, a topic that’s “going to be the key issue of 2013,” according to group leader Inigo Fraser-Jenkins. “We see a huge split in investor views on the subject.” The London-based crew is currently recommending that investors adopt a provalue, antiquality stance, because “there’s a larger gap than normal between value companies and quality companies,” he notes. In addition, “we think that investors are going to have to rebalance their portfolios and, when they do, that will provide some more support for value,” Fraser-Jenkins says.
