“They are knowledgeable and diligent.”

Christophe Boulanger and Darren Hook drive Barclays’s previously unranked London-based quartet into the winner’s circle. “The depth of their research is truly impressive,” declares one fund manager. The team’s top picks include Clariant’s euro-denominated 5.625 percent 2017 notes, first recommended back in June at 326 basis points, partly on the Swiss specialty chemicals manufacturer’s 125 basis point coupon step-up protection in the event of a ratings downgrade. By mid-January the notes had tightened to 180 basis points. Boulanger also co-directs (with Thomas Southon) this year’s top team in High-Yield Manufacturing/General Industrials. The 41-year-old, who received a bachelor’s degree in finance and accounting at Ecole Supérieure de Gestion Management School in Paris, moved to Barclays in 2011 from Crédit Agricole Corporate Investment Bank. Hook, also 41, earned a doctorate in clinical medicine at England’s University of Oxford before joining the firm in 1998; he also helms the No. 1 team in Investment-Grade Basic Materials.— Ben Mattlin
