David Halldén & team

U BS repeats in second place, but this year newcomer David Halldén oversees the Stockholm-based squad of five, following the departures of Myles Allsop, who now covers mining companies, and Mathias Carlson, who left the firm. “It’s a team in transition, and I expect good things in the future,” maintains one London-based buy-sider. The analysts report on nine stocks and plan to increase that number in the near future, Halldén says. The researchers have been bullish on manufacturers of tissue and other hygiene products, and throughout last year repeatedly highlighted their long-standing buy on Sweden’s Svenska Cellulosa. Aging populations would spur ever-increasing demand for the company’s personal-care products, they argued, and so far they have been right: The stock surged 41.8 percent in 2012, rising from 99.43 Swedish kronor to Skr141, and bested its sector by 28.7 percentage points. It remains a top pick. — Ben Mattlin
