Jun Harada

"I like his logical and well-reasoned analysis."

Jun Harada first appeared on the team in 2000, at No. 3. The UBS analyst climbed to second place in 2001 and to first in 2002 — and he has captured the top spot every year since, for a total of 12 first-place appearances and entry into the All-Japan Research Team Hall of Fame. “When I read his stuff, he’s always confident and always very clear in his arguments for his point of view,” observes one buy-side backer. “He explains why he likes something or how he gets to a number or an opinion.” Harada’s favorites include bullet-train operator East Japan Railway Co., on the belief that ridership is holding steady while “the potential for long-term cost-cutting and redevelopment opportunities in its nonrailway business” should propel the Tokyo-based transporter’s stock price. The 42-year-old analyst also continues to recommend buying Yamato Holdings Co. “Strong topline growth backed by the expansion of online sales and improvements in labor cost management,” Harada says, should boost profitability at the Tokyo-based provider of express delivery services. — Paul Sweeney
